Teacup / Toy Poodle Weight Chart
Teacup Poodle Size Info:
Teacup and tiny toy Poodles are very healthy and are not runts as some people might tell you. They are small offspring from small parents that were bred down from the Standard Poodle. This selective breeding took many years to produce a toy and then a teacup sized puppy.
Since teacup poodle is just a name given by dog breeders to describe an extra small poodle, there is no universal standard. Each dog breeder has their own definition of what size a teacup should be! Most breeders agree that a teacup poodle should be 4 pounds and under. But since poodles are measured by height and not weight, this should also be a factor. Most breeders also agree that a teacup poodle should be under 9 inches. This is because, even though a poodle should be built square, some poodles are built tall and thin and might only weigh 4 pounds, but can be 10 or 11 inches tall. Some are built short and fat and might only be 8 inches tall, but could weigh as much as 7 or 8 pounds. We believe a true teacup to be 2 to 4 pounds full grown and under 9 inches tall. On occasion we also have tiny toy Poodles that will be around 5 pounds and under 10" tall full grown. A teacup Poodle can weigh between 2 - 4 1/2 oz at birth depending on how many puppies are in the litter and how early or late in the pregnancy the mother goes into labor. At birth we get a good idea if a puppy is a teacup by the look of his/her, (bone structure, and fragility). We can not be sure until the puppy is at least 6 weeks of age what it will be full grown. I would also like to say : Do not believe a breeder that tells you your puppy is done growing at 6 months of age. I have added the graph below to show you that different breeds grow at different rates, and as you can see the weight of a toy / teacup Poodle would not tapper off until they are 12 to 16 months of age. I have also noticed that these dogs stop growing in height around 8 - 12 months of age. It does slow down dramatically around six months but does not stop until 8-12 months. In general you can double the weight at 10-12 weeks to get an idea of adult weight, and a 6 month old puppy has at least another inch or two to grow.
When it comes to guarantee of a puppy's adult size you must understand my estimate comes from many years of breeding and knowledge of past siblings and their parents. I can only guarantee I have honestly went by the weight chart in guess estimating a puppy's adult weight. I can say however, we have never had a toy sized Poodle born from our teacup lines. Our Poodles only come from tiny teacup sized lines and have not had a toy in their pedigree for several generations. I have no problem guaranteeing a client that their Poodle will not be a toy size Poodle. If your Poodle is 10" or over at a year of age I will gladly exchange it for a smaller puppy. You can see more info on this guarantee on the Teacup Poodle Page.
